5 Cocktails with New Orleans Connections

May 11, 2020

Try making one of these NOLA inspired cocktails at home.

Sazerac

Named by the State Legislature “New Orleans’ Official Cocktail,” this surely deserves to be #1 on our list!  Invented in the French Quarter in 1870, this cocktail was named for the bar where it was created, which in turn had been named for a French Cognac.

Always made with Rye whiskey, there’s debate amongst cocktail fans whether Angostura or Peychaud’s bitters should be used, or both! Make one of each and taste for yourself!

Frozen Daiquiri

One cannot walk down Bourbon Street without ricocheting off daiquiri shops, one after the other, like a human pinball.

With the shops now closed and hot weather on the rise, pull out the blender, grab a bottle of rum, and take advantage of farm-fresh berries to devise your own special flavor. More of a purist? Make yours a simple – yet delicious – frozen lime daiquiri!

Planning Mother’s Day Brunch?

These 3 New Orleans cocktails deserve a spot at every brunch table where eye-openers are served.

French 75

This festive and potent cocktail takes its name from the lethal kick of the French 75mm field artillery gun that was so integral to Allied Army wins during WWI.

While born in Paris, this cocktail has been highly popular in New Orleans for nearly 100 years. Made of Champagne, gin, and fresh sour mix, this is a refreshing option on warm days.

Ramos Gin Fizz

Invented by Henry C. Ramos in New Orleans in 1888, this frothy brunch favorite requires a good arm and a cocktail shaker – Ramos and his “shaker boy” teams were reputed to shake the cocktails for 10 or more minutes each!

Like drinking a flower, this cocktail’s ingredients include orange flower water, egg white, sugar … and gin!

Brandy Milk Punch

This innocent-looking, creamy concoction will slyly sneak up on you with a powerful brandy wallop. Extolled by New Orleanians as the ideal “hair of the dog” cure, it often takes form with bourbon instead of brandy. Sprinkle on the freshly grated nutmeg for an authentic look.

P.S.: Milk Punch is amazingly delicious when thrown into the blender with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
