Louisiana Announces Childcare Assistance Program

March 31, 2020

A new program will offer subsidized childcare for the children of “essential critical infrastructure personnel” during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Governor Edward’s order made earlier this month to close all schools through at least April 13 did not include childcare and early learning centers. Most closed their doors anyway, leaving working parents without reliable childcare.

In response, the Louisiana Department of Education announced the Child Care Assistance Program to support essential critical infrastructure personnel.

“If you can keep your children at home, please do so,” said Beth Scioneaux, acting state superintendent, in a press release from March 23. “We must ensure affordable access to childcare for those who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 response effort.”

By simply completing an application, these families can access subsidized care for children age 12 and under at licensed childcare centers participating in the program or through registered and certified family childcare and in-home providers.

To be considered essential critical infrastructure personnel, you must work in the following industries:

– Healthcare/Public Health
– Law Enforcement, Public Safety, First Responders
– Food and Agriculture
– Energy (electrical industry, petroleum, natural and propane gas workers)
– Waste and Wastewater
– Transportation and Logistics
– Public Works
– Communications and Information Technology
– Other Community-Based Government
– Critical Manufacturing
– Hazardous Materials

Those not working in these industries will be considered as well, but applications from those in critical industries will be expedited. The approval will be valid for 30 days. If the quarantine remains in place after 30 days, applications will be reassessed at that time.
